Sell it, donate it or haul it: the Oregon decision
The first choice is whether the contents are worth an estate sale before anything gets cleared out. Oregon has a long history for a village of about 12,000. It was settled as Rome Corners in 1841, the railroad arrived in 1864, and it incorporated in 1881. Some homes here have been in one family a long time, and long-held homes sometimes hold things worth selling.
AARP’s advice is simple: don’t throw things out before a sale has been evaluated. Estate sale companies typically take about 30% of gross, sometimes up to 40%. If the numbers don’t work, a straight cleanout is often the better route. Our guide to estate sale vs. cleanout lays out both options.
Workshops, garages and sheds
Tools and building materials are some of the easiest things to donate. Habitat ReStore Dane County takes tools, cabinets, windows, doors, building materials and furniture, plus appliances less than 10 years old. It has stores at 6201 Odana Rd and 4207 Monona Dr, and free pickup is available by calling 608-663-1191, though waits vary from days to a few weeks.
What ReStore won’t take matters in a garage cleanout: paint, carpet and electronics. Liquid or oil-based paint and other chemicals go to Dane County Clean Sweep, 7020 Maahic Way, for $15 a trip. Clean Sweep doesn’t accept gas cylinders over 1 pound, so bring up any propane tanks when you get your quote.
Furniture, clothes and household goods
The closest St. Vinny’s stores are in Stoughton and Verona (513 W. Verona Ave), and St. Vincent de Paul Madison offers free home pickup of furniture and household goods. Goodwill takes clothing, housewares, books and furniture, but not mattresses, cribs, car seats or large appliances, so ask the cleanout company about those.
Where the rest goes
- General trash: the Dane County Landfill, 7102 Maahic Way, takes resident loads. 2026 rates start at $15.03 for up to 500 pounds.
- Not an option: the City of Madison drop-off sites, which require proof of Madison residency.
- Medications: free MedDrop boxes are mostly at police stations; one listed location is the Fitchburg Police Department, 5520 Lacy Rd. No sharps.
- Curbside bulky pickup: check with the Village of Oregon’s public works department for its current rules.
Doing it yourself vs. hiring a cleanout company
If you have help and a few weekends, a dumpster can work. Bin There Dump That lists a 20-yard bin at $500 for seven days, and ZTERS lists $735 to $825 for ten days. Just remember that electronics and major appliances are banned from Wisconsin landfills and can’t go in the bin.
